How to Bleach Your Wig Like a Pro: A Beginner’s Guide

Bleaching the knots on your wig is one of the best ways to achieve a flawless, natural scalp effect. By lightening the small knots where hair is tied to the lace, you create the illusion that the hair is growing from your scalp. However, bleaching can weaken the knots, leading to shedding if done incorrectly.

For beginners, the safest approach is to use a 20-volume developer and a high-quality bleach like BlondMe Schwarzkopf Premium Lightener 9+, which lifts knots while protecting the hair’s integrity. If you’re more experienced, 30-volume developer can be used for a faster lift.IMG_2864.jpg

Step-by-Step Guide to Bleaching Your Wig Knots

Step 1: Prepare Your Wig

  • Place your wig on a mannequin head and secure it with pins.
  • Flip the wig inside out so that the lace is fully exposed.
  • Lightly mist the roots with water or holding spray to keep the hair from shifting.

Step 2: Mix Your Bleach

  • In a mixing bowl, combine 1 part BlondMe Schwarzkopf Premium Lightener 9+ Powder with 2 parts BlondMe Premium Developer (20 Vol for beginners, 30 Vol for advanced users).
  • Add a few drops of Olaplex No.1 Bond Multiplier to protect the hair strands from breakage.
  • Stir the mixture until it reaches a thick, creamy consistency (like toothpaste). It should not be runny!

Step 3: Apply the Bleach

  • Use a dye brush to lightly tap the bleach onto the knots.
  • Be gentle—do not press too hard, or the bleach will seep through the lace and lighten the roots.
  • Make sure all the knots are evenly covered with bleach.

Step 4: Let It Process

  • Leave the bleach on for 15–30 minutes depending on the wig’s lace and hair type.
  • Check the knots every 5–10 minutes to ensure they are lifting to a honey blonde color.
  • If the knots turn orange instead of blonde, you will need to tone them with purple shampoo.

Step 5: Rinse & Neutralize

  • Once the knots have reached the desired lightness, rinse the bleach out with lukewarm water.
  • Wash the lace with ISO Bouncy Creme Neutralizing Shampoo to completely stop the bleaching process.
  • If needed, apply purple shampoo to eliminate any orange/brassy tones.

Step 6: Deep Condition & Dry

  • Apply a deep conditioner to restore moisture to the hair.
  • Rinse thoroughly and let your wig air dry on a wig stand before styling.

Final Thoughts

Bleaching your wig correctly can make or break your install. For beginners, we recommend using 20-volume developer and checking the knots every 5 minutes to avoid over-processing. If you’re experienced, you can use 30-volume developer for a quicker lift, but be extra careful!

💡 Pro Tip: Always follow up with deep conditioning and bond protection to keep your wig soft, strong, and long-lasting.
